Doctors have surgeries at various times during the day between 08:30 and 17:50 (up to 19:30 on a Monday and from 07:30 on a Wednesday morning) to meet the preferred times of the majority of our patients.
Please see under ‘General Information’ regarding our appointment system. The appointments in our extended hours sessions (Monday evening and Wednesday early morning) should be left for those patients working full time or for those who rely on another person for transport. It is clearly more difficult for these patients to attend anytime but if you feel that you need to book an appointment in advance, please mention this when making your call and we will do our best to help.
Our nursing team are available every day and all their appointments are bookable in advance. They also hold regular clinics in our extended opening hours.
Telephone consultations are useful for those people who need advice, for instance about their medication, but do not necessarily need to be seen by a doctor. Our receptionists should not ask intrusive questions and will always respect your privacy but it is helpful if you can give them the relevant information they need to ensure you are given the best possible service from the practice.
A lot of what we do at Bakewell Medical Centre is preventing illness.
Therefore patients with long-term conditions need checking twice a year to make sure they are well. Patients are often confused about this and the language used, so here is a glossary – please feel free to learn the medical term or use normal language, click here.
In medicine, chronic means long-term, not severe.
All patients are entitled to have a chaperone present for any consultation, examination or procedure, where they feel one is required. This chaperone may be a family member or friend. On occasions you may prefer a formal chaperone to be present, i.e. a trained member of staff.
Wherever possible we would ask you to make this request at the time of booking your appointment so that arrangements can be made and your appointment is not delayed in any way. Where this is not possible we will endeavour to provide a formal chaperone at the time of request. However, occasionally it may be necessary to reschedule your appointment.
Your healthcare professional may also require a chaperone to be present for certain consultations in accordance with our Chaperone Policy.

If you cannot attend an appointment for any reason please inform us as soon as possible in order for us to give the slot to someone else.
There are a small minority of patients who book appointments and then fail to keep them or to tell us-the main impact of this is that someone else whose need was more urgent could have been seen. If patients continually miss appointments without letting us know, we may remove them from our list.
As part of their assessments, the GP registrars have to video some consultations to show the experienced GPs how well they communicate with patients. We will let you know and gain your consent if we are doing this but you are within your rights to say that you don't want this to happen.
